第49回:Surgeon General’s Warning

Surgeon General’s Warning

When you woke up this morning you didn’t know you wanted to read a column expounding upon cigarettes in the world of One Piece; but here you are and now you do.

This week’s might the first cover of One Piece that readers can actually *smell* with their eyes. Smoking might turn your lungs into tar pits but at least Brook doesn’t need to worry about that!

The only thing he’s concerned about is putting on his ‘Binks of Liquor’ record, a Google-ish translation of what we know as ‘Binks’ Booze’.

Is that a cigarette in Luffy’s mouth!? Jimminy-jillikers!

Unless of course it’s just a lollipop, HAHA!....oh wait…are those…oh those *are* lollipops by Luffy. This is kind of meta isn’t it?

Taking a close look, Robin’s preferred brand of cigs is ‘Killed by Smoke’ while Franky’s choice is ‘TEDDY’ which was a real Norwegian cigarette brand named after America’s President, Theodore Roosevelt. Wasn’t just the bears, eh?

Since we’re talking about cancer stick brands, how can we forget Sanji?

He might not be in the spread but Sanji’s favorite brand, Death Lights, has been making hidden appearances in the series for quite a while now.

The package design and name are both reminiscent of Marlboro’s iconic brand.

Finally a word on one of the other brands present; the One Piece world’s version of cola aptly named ‘Mocha Cola’. Here it makes one of its most prominent appearances although it has been glimpsed in the past.

ANIME

A Net Gain

All things considered, the animation is doing a swell job of patching together some dangling threads that Oda-sensei left to our imagination; threads that didn’t *need* explanations but certainly help the story feel more complete. A few weeks back we saw how Luffy escaped from Mingo’s wrist restraints and Toei’s writers came up with an explanation for how Robin and Cavendish managed to survive that dizzying fall.

With Cavendish tuckered out it was up to Robin to prevent them from plummeting to their deaths which Toei explained by means of a simple ’Spider Net’ from Robin. *golf clap* That’s what I’m talkin’ about people! Roll that beautiful semi-canon filler footage!

Lots of love for this anime-original scene of Bartolomeo performing Anime Training Trope #378: ’Punching the air in a grassy field for hours on end’.

Artsy Fartsy

Although disappointing that Oda-sensei never fully explored Giolla’s art powers in the comic, an anime-only scene where she turned the unfortunate henchmen carrying Dellinger into artwork meant one last glimpse at her ghastly gaseous ability in action.

Don’t you think she and Galdino would be awesome as a pair opening a gallery of their own someday?
