第210回：True Lies

Over time, more and more of Usopp’s lies have been proven true. With expectations riding high for Usopp’s role in Elbaph, it’s going to be interesting to see if his relationship with the giants become reality but before that, there’s the curious case of yet another one of Usopp’s lies coming true more than once!

Usopp made the claim that a lizard was a dragon and as we’ve known since at least Punk Hazard, dragons exist in the ONE PIECE world and, seemingly, there some variety of speciation. There are ‘climbing’ dragons with their snake-like bodies who emit cloud-like substances that they can climb or use to support themselves mid-air; so-called, Eastern dragons. And then there are ‘flying’ dragons who utilize wings to become airborne; so-called Western dragons.

While there’s a potential case to be made for wyverns existing in the world of ONE PIECE, we cannot know for certain whether Oda will explore their place in the world or not. That said, anime or otherwise, there is certainly a case to be made for the existence of wyverns as the dragon seen in the middle of the Harley *may* be a wyvern or it may simply be a four-legged dragon like Nidhogg, if not the previous incarnation of Nidhogg itself.

Either way, Usopp’s lie about the existence of dragons has come true not once, not twice, not thrice, not four times, not even five! Loki marks the SIXTH time Usopp’s lie has become true! Even if we ignore that Vegapunks dragons were numbered at *least* up to 21, I don’t think this will be the last time this particular lie of Usopp’s comes true for the series.

Man’s Best Friend, Friend, Friend

Dragons aren’t the only lie of Usopp’s coming true more than once this arc! Usopp’s figment of Cerberus was already proven to be true during Thriller Bark with the Cerberus zombie. But -perhaps unsatisfied with the fox head being a cheat, or maybe even a cheeky dig at the long-standing Cerberus theory for Blackbeard- Oda saw fit to give us the Cerberus fruit in the form of Shamrock’s sword, Cerberus. I’m waiting for someone to ask via SBS, “What would the anthropomorphized form of this sword look like?” Sure, it can transform into a beast, but what does the ‘soul’ of the sword look like?!

Usopp’s verbally expressed lies aren’t the only ones that can come true. Usopp’s MASSIVELY oversized ‘hammer’ on a stick is now an actual weapon and it is….SO much heavier than 5 tons or even 10 tons (or even 100, I see you, Film Z!) Ragnir is the realization of an oversized hammer and I shudder to think about how much it *really* weights.

While it’s impossible for Usopp to wield this hammer under ‘normal’ conditions, it would be curious if the mysterious ‘energy’ blanketing Elbaph alongside Vegapunk’s hover tech might make such an impossible situation come true!
