第44回:The 'D' is in the Details

COMIC

The ’D’ is in the Details

Lots of short and sweet details to check out this week! Let’s jump in!

An Acquired Taste

Luffy doesn’t really like sake? Huh, go figure. I guess it’s more of an old-timer’s drink anyway.

He had no qualms sharing the ’Sanzoku Sakazuki’ sake with his brothers though! Guess it really takes someone special for Luffy to share sake with them. Maybe when he’s older!

A Painful Law

Bet One Piece fans around the world can hear the screaming of fangirls from Japan thanks to this smiling Law. You gotta love this genuine smile from ’Surgeon of Death’, can you even imagine the weight that’s been taken off his shoulders? But now comes the hard part, Kaidou.

Sadly, Law can’t even enjoy a drink without *someone* from the Straw hat crew giving him trouble. Along comes Zoro, deep in his cups, and slaps his arm around RIGHT on Law’s wounded arm. OW.

Discovering the ’Middle’ World

Back in the 19th installment of this column we explored the gag behind Orlumbus’ name but since it’s only available in Japanese here’s a quick review. In Japanese, the name ’Columbus’ could sound like 小ロンボス or ’Little Lumbus’ so with Orlumbus, Oda-sensei removed the ’little’ and replaced it with a word for ’big’: 大ロンボス lit. ’Ooronnbosu’ which has been officially Romanized as Orlumbus.

Now in Chapter 800, we learn there really *IS* a member or Orlumbus’ crew named Columbus who seems to be a visibly similar and smaller version or Orlumbus. I bet you dollars to donuts, one of these days we’re going to see Midlumbus in his crew!

Fans Gone Wild

HooooMAMA! The fan-theories are flying fast and furious after this chapter, and what a chapter it was! There are some obvious juicy bits of info we could chew on this week but instead, let’s look at some of the easily missable details in the chapter.

The Fourth Hero

Kyros, Lucy and (just as Usopp asked) ’God Usopp’ have been immortalized as statues in Dressrosa!

But there’s someone else too! Look behind Luffy’s shoulder to see Noland’s chestnut head as well! Did the Tontatta’s commission a new statue based on the one in their village?

Bellamy’s Whereabouts

So where does Bellamy go from here? I believe he’s ripe for some splash-page side-story action! Either way I can’t help but wonder if his journeys will lead him across *other members* of Mingo’s former crew.

Autographs

Putting, the autographs of people you admire in a frame. Let’s round the comic section off this week by looking at some of the autographs:

Luffy: Typical.

Zoro: *Katana* Typical…again.

Usopp: His name in cursive instead of Japanese? stylish! As for the design he drew on the sign board, a friend suggested that it represents Usopp’s face in profile! From left to right: his nose, one eye and a tuft of hair. Huh! Interesting! What do you see?

Franky: Franky signs his name in print and English, simple and super!

Robin: Perhaps the most thoughtful autograph, Robin always called Bartolomeo ’rooster’ for his hairstyle and here she’s drawn a chicken for him in her own..uh…*special* style.

ANIME

A Game of Cat and Mouse

It’s not a terribly important detail but I was impressed when a single panel from the comic was sweetly expanded for the animation. I’m referring to the scene where Corazon reveals his Devil’s Fruit ability to Law and a cat chases after a mouse.

The anime gives us the aftermath of that encounter wherein the mouse escapes with his life and happily munches on an apple.

A Binding Relationship

Oh wow! I never realized before this episode that the manga never explained how Luffy managed to untie his hands!

To be honest it was a little jarring to be pulled back into Dressrosa during the flashback, but getting even just a tiny expansion of manga events is a major plus!
